The Nervous System includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The nervous system controls and directs every activity in your body.

My brain is like a machine always functioning. It weighs between two and three pounds. It is like a computer that answers my questions and sends messages all over my body.
My brain has many nerves. It helps me talk, write, see, smell, hear, and many other things. My brain moves faster than I can blink my eyes.

My brain is very fragile and soft. The right side of my brain is the artistic side, and used for creative thinking, often involving a visual problem, or puzzle. The right side of the brain is skillful in recognizing shapes and patterns. It helps is with understanding and knowing the world all around us. It doesn't help with our speech. It can, for example, pick out a familiar face from a crowd of people.
The left side of the brain works in this way in most people, but in left handed people the right side of the brain may be the logical half.
If old people have a stroke, one part of the brain is damaged.
The brain is protected by skin, and bone. A strong blow to the head could shake the brain, though.
Like the brain, the spinal cord needs protection. While the brain is safely enclosed in a rigid skull, the spinal cord is surrounded by a set of bones called vertebrae.

The spinal cord is an extension of the brain, extending about two-thirds of the way down the middle of the back to just below the ribs.
