What Do Spiders Eat?

Spiders spend most of their lives searching for food.  They are very helpful to humans, too.  They are helpful because they eat things that are annoying and sometimes harmful to humans.

Most spiders eat insects, but they can also eat other spiders.  Some spiders, like the fishing spider, will eat baby fish called minnows.

Tarantulas will eat insects as well as small rodents like little mice.
The mice give the tarantula extra nutrients it needs to grow.

Spiders come in a variety of brilliant colors.  This allows them to adapt and blend in to their environment.  Insects have a hard time seeing the spiders.
In this picture, a fly was caught by a yellow Crab spider.

Web spiders use their silk to wrap an insect in a cocoon.  The insect is paralyzed, and the spider can save it for later.
Spiders use fangs to bite their prey.  The fangs are tucked away under the mouth and are not used until the spider is hungry.

Spiders blend into their living environment.  This green Garden spider has made a home in some flowers.  It will be difficult for insects to see the spider.
