"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."

A poem created by the community
at the Redwood City Freedom Festival, January 21, 2002
in honor of the birthday of
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for the rights of his people.
Respect is what he fought for.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was the best man in the country. His
Aspiration was for all men and women to have a better life in this country.
Reading about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. makes me happy. I
Think Dr. King was a very great man to give his life for humanity.
I think Dr. King was a very brave man.
Nobody else could have done anything better than he did. I

Like it that Dr. Martin Luther King helped other people. He stood
Up for his people.
Time only makes his words more powerful.
He was the most popular person in his time.
Everyone was inspired by him.
Right when he found out about the nonsense, he wanted it to stop.

Kindness is what he was looking for.
I like the things he did for us.
Never before has racism been brought to the forefront in the world.
Girls and boys feel happy about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Justice rang from his voice.
Righteousness rolled down like the waters.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

You faced injustice, hate and strife.
You fought for what should be.
You risked and finally gave your life,
So others could be free.

You could have hated, but you chose
To love and understand,
Rejecting violence to oppose
An evil in our land.

You'd not inflame, but still inspire,
With hope that wouldn't yield.
You called for boycotts, not for fire,
With faith your only shield.

You marched in protest for the poor
Of every shade and hue.
So many hardships you'd endure
For those who needed you.

You stirred a nation's heart and mind;
Your message still is clear:
That color's not how we're defined.
Your memory's always near.

Each year your birth's a holiday.
The nation honors you,
And wonders when we'll see the day
Your dream at last comes true.

Martin Luther King

(sung to Mary Had a Little Lamb)

Who was Martin Luther King, Luther King, Luther King?

He was a man who had a dream

That we would all be free.

Martin Luther gave a speech, gave a speech, gave a speech.

He wanted all of us to live In peace and harmony.

He won the Nobel Prize for Peace,

 Prize for Peace,

Prize for Peace.

For his love for all the world

And for you and me.

On Martin Luther King Day

Treat people kindly.

Do what is fair.

Work for all people.

 Show that your care.

Change what is wrong,

But, please do not fight.

Think of new ways

To change wrong to right.

These are the ways

If we work as a team,

To remember the man

Who said, "I have a dream."
